AFFI Members Conduct Japan OFW Seminar
| |
| |
The Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA), in cooperation with the Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI) recently held a franchising seminar in Tokyo, Japan for Filipinos working there, pursuant to the government's re-integration program. The franchise seminar aims to introduce the concept of franchising and its advantages as a business option for OFWs who want to invest their hard-earned money while they are still employed abroad.
| |
| |
AFFI member-entrepreneurs who lent expertise on the topic of franchising during the 2-day seminar in Roppongi were (shown above left):Tiks Laurel of Goto King, Ricky Cuna of Fiorgelato, Leni Adriano of Tacomio, and Annie Go of Panciteria Lido. Embassy officials led by Ambassador Domingo Siazon Jr., Labor Attaché Reynaldo Regalado, Deputy Chief of Mission Claro Cristobal and Welfare Officer Josephine Sanchez were instrumental in implementing the project. This is the first franchising seminar held in the Philippine Embassy and it is hoped that several other seminars will be conducted in countries where there is a big concentration of OFWs.
| |
| |
Ultimately, this program achieves 2 goals: (1) a chance for OFWs to invest in established business names and formats, and (2) remittances invested in small and medium scale businesses, which will further drive our economy. Hopefully, in the future, the OFWs will also be instrumental in exporting these homegrown franchises to other countries. Truly, the OFW is the modern day Filipino hero.

1st Philippine Franchise Symposium
October 17, 2003, Abu Dhabi
Philippine Franchisors Triumph In Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates was host to the first-ever Philippine Franchise Symposium held last October 17, 2003. The Al Graith Tower in Hamdan Road, welcomed both the delegation of Philippine franchisers, who flew in to present their business offerings to our countrymen based in the emirate, as well as the throng of Abu Dhabi-based overseas Filipino workers and businessmen that gathered early to take part in the franchise seminar, the first activity of its kind in the UAE.
Organized by the Philippine Business Council of UAE (PBC-UAE), headed by Jovy Tuaño and the Association of Filipino Franchisers, Inc. (AFFI), headed by Chit Juan, this breakthrough event was a very welcome development, as evidenced by the number of prospective investors who queued up for the symposium.
As early as 12 noon, an enthusiastic crowd filled up the Le Boulanger Hall in the Securities Building in anticipation of the Franchise Symposium slated at 1 pm. Attendees were so excited to learn about the various business prospects for their relatives back home. Their concerns were ably addressed by the Philippine delegation from AFFI headed by its chairperson, Tiks Laurel of Goto King, as well as its members Tess and Ed Ngan Tian of Lotsa Pizza, Jo Barbosa of Reyes Haircutters, Chit Juan and Reena Francisco of Figaro Coffee Company. Guest attendees were House of Praise owner Johnny Sy and Jeff Oreta who brought CDs for sale and explained the House of Praise franchise, too.
The wide array of AFFI franchises were showcased through talks given by company heads, audio visual presentations and brochures. The crowd eagerly collected brochures from all AFFI members, and asked when the next symposium or seminar would be.
The event was graced by Charge D'Affairs Bert Calonge of the Phil Consulate and the DTI was represented by Trade Representative Gil Herico (who drove all the way from Dubai on a Friday rest day). Also present were Essam Azar of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Salim of Emirates Holdings.
Franchise guru Armando "Butz" Bartolome, AFFI director and president of GMB Franchise Developers, conducted the franchise seminar. The crowd was encouraged to send "Franchise Businesses" as gifts of support to their relatives back home instead of the usual jeep or taxi franchise. Further, Franchise Businesses can be an alternative retirement investment and an alternative to working away from one's family for a long time. Even foreigner-partners of Filipino professionals attended the event which lasted until 7 pm as there were a lot of questions from the overwhelmed crowd. This is indeed only the first time that they understood Franchising as a way of doing business for yourself but not by yourself. Due to the success of this endeavor, both PBC and AFFI are now planning the next series of seminars which may be a roadshow to include Dubai, Doha and other cities in the Middle East. |
